Consortium of Universities and Hospitals Works to Cure Childhood Cancers

BLOOMINGDALE, Ill., March 14, 2006 – The Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation (CNCF) presented a $100,000 check March 10 to New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy (NANT), a consortium of universities and hospitals working to fight childhood cancers.

Researchers at NANT member institutions will use the funds to help pay for research of new therapies that can improve long-term survival for children with neuroblastoma. NANT conducts clinical trials to test new drugs and new combinations of drugs against neuroblastoma.

Neuroblastoma is a childhood solid tumor cancer that forms in the nervous system outside the brain. It accounts for 14 percent of all cancers in children ages 5 and younger, with the average age at diagnosis being 2 years old. Nearly 70 percent of children diagnosed with neuroblastoma have disease that has already spread to other parts of the body. The disease is labeled according to its aggression; low-, intermediate- and high-risk.

Very little is known about what causes neuroblastoma or what factors increase the risk for its occurrence. The prognosis for neuroblastoma is dependent on the child’s age, stage of disease and the characteristics of the tumor.
NANT is a group of physician investigators linked with laboratory programs that develop new therapies for high-risk neuroblastoma. Member universities and hospitals stretch across the country, from Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. to Children’s Hospital Boston, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Mass.

About CNCF: The Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation (CNCF) is a national voluntary health organization whose mission is to help find a cure for children’s neuroblastoma and to improve the lives of children suffering from the disease. Children’s neuroblastoma is a virulent and little understood solid-tumor cancer with a five-year survival rate of 30% for high-risk children. The CNCF supports pediatric oncology research for the treatment and cure of children’s neuroblastoma and assists patients and their families through service, public education and advocacy.

Founded in 2000, the Foundation is headquartered in Bloomingdale, Illinois, outside Chicago, with member volunteers throughout North America.  CNCF is a 501 (c)(3) public charity, ID #36-4370725.
