New Under the Microscpoe Article!   Upcoming events

This week's newest edition to "Under the Microscope" is a presentation on Neuroblastoma Bone (and Bone Marrow) Metastases by Dr. Heidi Russell.  On March 18,2008, Dr. Russell spent a little over an hour speaking with families about neuroblastoma bone and bone marrow metastases during the CNCF's online educational series.  Dr. Russell is known as a leader among the neuroblastoma community in this area of research and is the lead investigator for the NANT consortium's phase I clinical trial, "N2004-01: A Phase I Study of Zoledronic Acid (Zometa) with Cyclophosphamide in Children with Recurrent or Refractory Neuroblastoma and Cortical Bone Involvement."  The entire presentation and discussion with Dr. Russell can be found here.

Under the Microscope

"Under the Microscope" is a new research blog created just for families of children with neuroblastoma. As many know it can be very difficult to find information and more often it is even harder to make sense of the research. Mark Dungan tackles tough topics submitted by readers. He meets with neuroblastoma researchers and combs published articles to find the best and most up to date answers to your questions. His articles are provided without bias and in both print and video. His first article, "Could we be hearing less about hearing loss?" can be found here. The video summary is available in the CNCF's YouTube Channel found below.

More Research

(from left to right Carl A. Formato, Judy Formato, Dr. Robert Seeger, Mark Dungan, Dr. Judy Villablanca, Dr. Kate Matthay)
CNCF representatives Carl A. Formato, Judy Formato, and Mark Dungan make $100,000.00 check presentation to NANT on March 10, 2006.   Due to the success of this year's Lunch for Life campaign and the incredible results of several other fundraisers benefitting the CNCF ( Allie & Friends Golf Classic, the Fore Noah Golf Tournament, Laura's Triathalon, etc.) we are able to begin funding larger projects and trials.  Not only will we commit to funding up to 4 new two year trials but we were able to fund two new large research projects as soon as the donations came through the door. Our first presentation (shown below) occured at the 6th Annual New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Treatment (NANT) Consortium Meeting on March 10, 2006. Click here to read more.

You have been given heartbreaking news. Your child, or a child you love, has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma.

The prognosis is uncertain.

When your life is turned upside-down by a diagnosis of cancer, it often takes a while to get your bearings and think straight. After you do, you need to know the facts, assess your situation, and take action.

At the Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation, we are here to help.

Cancer in children and adolescents is rare. In the year 2005, close to 12,500 children will be diagnosed and approximately 2300 will die of cancer. Cancer is the leading cause of death from disease in children between the ages of 1 and 19.

Great strides have been made in the overall survival rate of children with cancer. This has been the result of the advances and improvement made in the treatment of childhood cancers. More still needs to be done.

Continued progress on increasing the survival rate for all childhood cancers, reducing the serious side effects of cancer treatment, improving the quality of life during treatment, understanding the importance of genetics and its influences with environmental exposures, are all part of the continuing efforts of many dedicated people, and institutions and organizations, like CNCF.

Neuroblastoma accounts for 97% of the cancers of the Sympathetic Nervous System, which comprises one of the twelve major categories of the International Classification of Childhood Cancers (ICCC). The incidence rate for all sympathetic nervous system cancers was 9.5 per million children. Neuroblastoma accounts for 14% of all cancers in children younger than five years of age.

Neuroblastoma is a solid tumor cancer that begins in the nerve tissue in the neck, chest, abdomen, or pelvis but usually originates in the abdomen in the tissue of the adrenal gland.

Nearly 70% of those children first diagnosed, have disease that has already metastasized or spread to other parts of the body. The average age at diagnosis is two years old.

Prognosis for neuroblastoma is dependent on age, stage of disease, and the molecular biologic and cytogenetic characteristics of the tumor. There is very little known about why neuroblastoma occurs, or about what factors increase the risk for occurrence.
